Hip-hop roots. An open choreographic language.

 

Based in France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Compagnie Métamorphoz creates dance at the meeting point of hip-hop, contemporary movement, jazz and theatre. Led by choreographer Mohamed Rouabah since 2010, the company explores the expressive power of the body and the distinctive qualities of each performer.

 

Its work brings physical commitment, musicality and theatrical presence into dialogue, connecting artistic cultures and audiences across generations.

 

The artistic director

 

A pioneer of the hip-hop scene in Rhône-Alpes, Mohamed Rouabah began breaking in 1997. His practice is grounded in sustained study of dance, martial arts and gymnastics. He holds the French State Diploma in contemporary dance teaching, has passed the jazz Technical Aptitude Examination and is completing his State Diploma in jazz.

 

His performing career includes several years with Mourad Merzouki’s Compagnie Käfig, in works including Terrain vague, Récital and Diversion, alongside collaborations with Compagnie Malka and Jérôme Savary. He was also selected as a reserve artist for Cirque du Soleil.

 

Productions & international dialogue

 

Discover Ballet2Rue, Jazz, Feng Shui and La Boîte à Musique. Feng Shui brings Mohamed Rouabah into an artistic dialogue with Chinese choreographer Phoenix (Du Fei), extending the company’s interest in cross-cultural creation.

Creation, transmission & artist development

 

Under Mohamed Rouabah’s artistic direction, the Métamorphoz team develops workshops, choreographic projects and arts education programmes with schools, higher education institutions and cultural organisations.

 

Since 2015, he has also directed the MZDS choreographic centre in Andrézieux-Bouthéon. With over 450 regular students, a class working towards professional pathways and a residency programme, MZDS supports both emerging dancers and companies through artistic development, scenography and administrative guidance.
